This week on Saturday 5th November at the NOVEMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL in Den Bosch, we are presenting a new music-theater production “ Een Oog in Zee “.

Parlement van de Bomen ( * Parliament of the Trees ) in Amstelpark, on Sunday 16th October 2022.

-

This week on Sunday 16th October, I will be participating and performing in " Parlement van de Bomen ( Parlement of the Trees ), a project by artist Elmo Vermijs, together with inspiring people such as lawyers, judges, clerk, defendant, university professor expert, and also artists and many people, and many trees..

I will be performing there ( for about 10 minutes ) on behalf of trees.. and hopefully navigating all of us into the states of listening to what the trees say.. because they have voices if we ever dare to listen to..

==

Parlement van de Bomen, organised by artist Elmo Vermijs in collaboration with environmental lawyers Jessica den Outer and Jan van de Venis, this trial explores how non-human entities, such as trees, can become legal entities and how this legal status can contribute to better protection of forests and city parks. This speculative trial* follows the lead of the increasingly influential international rights-for-nature movement.

The trees of the Amstelpark become legal entities. Several local polluters will be on trial and must defend themselves. Lawyers have prepared their cases.

Artists from various disciplines will present their artistic case, based on their research into the representation of the tree as a non-human entity. The judges will deliberate and rule.

The audience will witness the speculative trial live and play an important role.

* For the project I have written for myself some sort of text ( that was written on on 21st August 2022 ) so that was written already 1.5 month ago..

Although knowing well that the world keeps on changing every single day into something totally else ( somehow ), day by day, let alone weeks and months.. .. but still, anyhow I thought I would just share some of my notes here as well, just in case if that might resonates with anyone else..

==

- Kenzo’s writing text for the project “ No Access “ at Nederlandse Dansdagen in Maastricht 2022 -

Torn between the two seemingly contradictory fluxes and forces, like the 2 flooding rivers rushing and crushing into each other; one river being the desperately challenging situations in the current world that the most vulnerable and the most gentle people facing the calamities and having no other choice than having to flee their beloved home land and beloved families, having to step and jump across many unknown, often very dangerous and unseen borders, seeking the way out into the relative safety at times… just to be able to breathe a little bit more, and then a little bit more, and then a little bit more.. until the breathing rhythm seems to come back somehow in the way how it used to have felt like, somehow, but only somehow.., as some alternative way at times.., and slowly and hopefully regaining back again the natural rhythm of the breathing and the feeling of the cherishing the warmth of life.. home.. the relief.. from the bottom of being.. that is so essential and so important for everyone, which has to be everyone’s essential birth right.. But the current world seems to be so dislocated and ripped apart, dispersed into broken pieces, like the forceful river breaking and bursting, taking everything from somewhere to elsewhere..

On the other hand, the other flooding river has also been long saturating over the years, ready to be flooding out now and again, there is this underground fortress, totally hidden and isolated from the rest of the world by its heavily sealed hermetic walls that are made of solid iron and beton concrete, or rather, the solid iron walls made of seeping fear and insecurity, where nothing is moving inside, totally unmovable like an sunken ship resting on the bottom of the deep sea, the hollowness of the space resonates a particular kind of silence which is not so akin to life, the massive human construct expressing its peculiarity in some way or another, this is also massive and tangible.

Torn between those 2 seemingly contradictory ( or not..? ) fluxes and forces of these 2 flooding rivers, as if standing at the most turbulent crossroad in the world, I only find myself just standing on the very tiny ground under my tiny soles, totally stunned with powerlessness and numbness to the bones.

Please share and spread the words to who(m)ever might be interested and curious to join my workshop.. 😉 shy and introvert people ( like myself.. ) are more than super super welcome.. 😉 we move a bit together.. gentle and subtle .. in the nature ( and in our nature ) in Amstelpark.

.. we breathe with trees as our companions .. we move with sea of clouds .. flock of birds are flock of wonders .. we change names and go beyond names and shapes.. trees are magic animals looking back at us hum-mans.. what are we in the eyes of magic animals we call trees, clouds, insects, flowers.. Do I really know you..? .. we are mirrors facing each other.. then the light comes in, from that particular angle.. the world changes.. casting the long shadows in this particular angle.. all these shadows are all families and friends with one another.. shadows blurring, new clouds set in .. new magic animals in the sky, the wind and the earth's rotation, we are all moving along while being still and being alive..

No experience needed.., well, just bring some warm comfortable clothes with you ( and you may sweat and have to change clothes afterward ) because we will be mostly outside ( that's the idea ) .. I hope it will not rain ( so much ) on Saturday afternoon, at least.. well anything goes and we will be alright.

In Loving Memory of Jaap Flier ( Den Haag, 27 February 1934 - Bloemendaal, 18 March 2022 ), a legendary pioneer in the world of dance, our super hero, our best friend, our inspiration, our shining star.

Last Friday, I have heard the sad news that our beloved friend and an incredible visionary and pioneer of the world of dance, Jaap Flier ( Jacob Flier, as he always called himself as Jacob, we also call him Jacob, with so much love and respect.. ) has passed away last Friday while he was sleeping, at the age of 88.

He was a legendary classical ballet dancer in the 1950’s, often mentioned as the first “ prince “ in classical ballet world in The Netherlands after the World War 2, he was an incredibly gifted and charismatic super star dancer who has been the leading force of the ballet world in 1950’s with great people such as Sonia Gaskell, Glen Tetley, Hans van Manen, Rudi van Danzig and many great innovators in dance world, then Jacob’s creative spirit was so strong and fierce and unstoppable, he become one of the founding members of Nederlands Dans Theater ( NDT ) in 1959 to start up NDT, and also later on during the 1980's Jacob became one of the leading forces at the first beginning period of SNDO ( School for New Dance Development ) in Amsterdam together with Pauline de Groot and Aat Hougée, where Jacob has been such a strong driving force and a huge creative influence and impact on many aspiring dancers and choreographers and dance/theater makers as well as on the public and audiences members, to open up and digging deeply into the dance as an art form, as well as expanding and exploring the world of dance beyond anyone could possibly imagine at that time. Later Jacob worked with Boukje Schweigman, to create an amazingly beautiful duet Grond (2006), a beautiful duet between Jacob & Boukje.

Jacob has always been a person whom I look up to with so much admiration and reverence, and simply being around him has always been an inspiration by itself, I’ve learned so much from Jacob, and will be learning more and more by feeling and sensing his generous presence in the air everywhere, an inspiration that is simply timeless and always with us in our heart, we cherish and carry the spirits of Jacob wherever we go.

He always welcomed us and made us feel at home with his open arms and open heart, with his vibrant sense of humour and joyous curiosity, and his mischievous smile and his intuitive and playful natural spirit, guiding each of us to go and discover the beauty that the life can reveal at our presence and attendance, wether it be a human or flower or a tree or the ray of sunshine, he smiles at the world, and dance with that ever changing, mysterious and fascinating, world.

Jacob was always encouraging us to go deep and and look into the essence of things, cherishing and contemplating with the sense of awe and wonder, he has always been such a generous person whom you could really talk to and exchange and ponder together, a real master and a real super star, a shining guide and a shining light, a teacher of life whom I truly adore from the deepest place.

I first got to know Jacob through my participation to choreographer Dylan Newcomb’s works for which I was one of the participating dancers ( that was around 2004~2006, I think..? ), then following that first encounter, I took my courage to ask Jacob to help me as the artistic advisor to with my own choreographic works at Korzo Productions ( my own choreographic works, such as “ Honey Crypto “ in 2008, for example ) since then Jacob was my artistic advisor and mentor and he encouraged me and inspired me so much for both my choreographic works & my improvisational works in all ranges as a dancer / choreographer / performer, and we became a very good friends as well.

Also Jacob was the person who had introduced me and connected me to Boukje Schweigman, another amazing artist in the field, Jacob really wanted Boukje and me working together and create something new, so he brought Boukje to my premier show of my work Honey Crypto, and immediately Boukje and I clicked perfectly and we decided to work together for a new project, that resulted into my first collaboration with Boukje Schweigman, TUSSEN ( 2010 ) with Schweigman& Company, for which Jacob was the cupid angel, connecting all the fascinating dots into a dynamic lines and waves and dimensions, creating a new chemistry and magic between people he meets, so for me, Jacob has been really so dynamically creating the dynamic movements of my path as a dance artist and a person, I cannot thank him enough with any words and any expression, but Jacob, thank you, thank you so much, my life has been so enriching and so amazing and inspiring thanks to you, I feel so grateful, thank you Jacob for everything..!!!

Jacob always made us feel so welcomed and made us feel so cozy at his home, with his delicious food he always cooked for us so amazingly in his magic kitchen with his best earthy red wines from French country side ( and we all get drank so happily altogether always!! ) and such a preciousness in everything he does and he was always there to share and listen and enjoy and dance and laugh and sing in the sun from the widely open window to the beautiful big oak tree which was growing alongside the canal water in front of his house, water flowing and reflecting the afternoon sunshine in the warm spring air, the big oak tree that was giving the beautiful shades and sparkles of prism of light here and there, creating an ambience of an oasis where you could rest and recharge your energy with creative tranquility. Overlooking the big oak tree which was right in front of sunny window from his cozy living room, we had many wonderful conversations from time to time and that was all so inspirational and nourishing.

Many years ago ( maybe more than 10 years ago? ), Jacob once told me that he had been always feeling a very strong special connection and a deep friendship with that big oak tree he has seen everyday from his sunny cozy living room window for many years, Jacob and a tree have became very good friends over the years and decades. When he told me about his deep connection to the tree, I totally understood what he meant, and since then the way I look at the trees and the nature in general have changed in a very inspiring way. As Jacob is someone who can really feel and connect to everything he sees and feels the essence and the beauty in everything he encounters and he communicates beyond words, as such a legendary dance artist as Jacob that would certainly be the most natural thing to feel and communicate far beyond words can describe and far beyond everything, as he has always been the true essentialist who really leap so high and turn and spin so powerfully, so centrifugally and so gracefully beyond all boundaries to reach everyone and everything, at the same time on the courageous journey to go finding the strong centre, axis, the essence, digging so deep to the core, the essence.. and dance with the core essence, letting everything and everyone dance with him, that is uncompromisingly the Jacob’s spirit, that touches us and moves us so deeply.

Thank you so much Jacob, I miss you very much.

Kenzo

    -

    - Link: https://vimeo.com/517177985

    I am very happy to share with you, this new dance film called DUÆL ( *directed by Jellie Dekker ), in which I am invited to join and blend myself in as an integral part of the force of nature, immersed in the multiple layers of perceived reality in the world we live and experience at each given moment.

    The title DUÆL has an implication of both two seemingly so mistakingly similar but indeed very differently meant words and terms, such as: Dual & Duel. They fuse into each other, becoming one ambiguous and symbiotic whole; DUÆL.

    Also the two completely different places, Here and There, or There and Here, ( depending on where you are ), start to infiltrate with each other and merge into one another, only gradually to make you realise deeply that you ARE the tunnel in between.

    Hope you enjoy the journey this film takes you along, hope this becomes a sort of an inspiration for a day, and please feel free to share and exchange. Have a nice day everyone-! Kenzo

    I have been literally so mesmerized and euphoric and so extremely happy!! Feeling so inspired while sharing the space and the spirits with such an amazing collective of people with incredibly deep souls and talents and wholeheartedness from each individual artist, sparkling as one and emerging as the movement that became so tangible and overwgelmingly powerful, that is so authentic to the core and so permeantly resonating beyond any borders. " For Ever Four Seasons " in Copenhagen at Pakhus 11 as part of Dansehallerne's spring program..! For Ever Four Seasons" is a choreographic and musical work which insists on slowness, as an act of resistance against our rapidly accelerating world. At one and the same time, Jon R. Skulberg and Convoi Exceptionnel want to give the audience a sensuous experience, which both pleases and disturbs while posing the fundamental question: What is the role of mankind in the Anthropocene era? The first dancer, Kenzo Kusuda, has freed himself of the patterns of human motion to create the basic form of "nature". The second dancer, Marianna Kavallieratos, is a figure wandering in a probable and violent vision of the future - in an impossible attempt to build a relationship with the outside world and a "nature" which no longer bears any resemblance to itself. The two dancer's conditions and emotional states are anchored to the newly composed works by the cello duo Soma & Lil and composer and sound artist Kristian Hverring. Jon R. Skulberg's staging, scenography and light invite the audience to a series of images of presence in slow but constant change.

      • ==============================================

      • ONEIRO is the interplay between magic of the intermediate space where the spirits of dreams inhabit and take charges, the space which is dreaming its strangest dreams - sometimes taking shapes of forgotten debris of humane feelings and other times the shapes of the broken pieces of lost music.
      • The initial inspiration motive and the central music piece of the performance ONEIRO, is David Lang's music composition "World to Come", which he created after the September 11 tragedy in NY, when the world was standing in the midst of huge uncertainty. Cellist Mindaugas Bačkus and choreographers Kenzo Kusuda & Agnija Šeiko; the creators of the performance ONEIRO were also inspired not only by the deep, mathematical music, but also by the name World To Come that indicates the state of the limbo, an intermediate stage between the end and what is waiting beyond it, what awaits on the next page unturned yet; that which awaits you overleaf.
      • ONEIRO invites the viewer to actively experience that momentary moment, highlight it, and delve into it. The name of the dance performance ONEIRO, which refers to the dream space, or " The Spirit of Dreams ", also succumbs to various interpretations. In Japanese, the word 'Ne-Iro' can be read as a sound texture or the color of the sound. The territory of the dream (from Ancient Greek oneiro - dreams, dream gods, spirit of dreams ) is a hard-to-define intermediate space where the shore of the real world bounces into an indefinite ocean of space that blurs the boundaries of one's consciousness. It is a borderline experience that everyone experiences when their eyes are closed, but when they wake up they are swept aside. Oneiro invites you to stay in the area with your eyes open and all your senses.

        MOVING GUITARS - Moving Guitars is a performance where music, images, and dance enter into a dialogue with each other. Movement is the one element uniting them. Refined ancient dances played on baroque guitar by Izhar Elias are set against rough new sounds on the electric guitar by composer Florian Magnus Maier. While the music develops, a magic air-filled pillow grows to gigantic proportions. It breathes and moves like a cosmic body on which video projections by Paul and Menno de Nooijer react to the music. Dancer Kenzo Kusuda moves like a sort of god between the different worlds.

        NL/Japan / 2018 / 17 minutes / Colour / No dialogue or subtitles
        A dancer (Kenzo Kusuda) becomes an inhabitant of a landscape made of porcelain. The dancer’s contour directs the eye along a visual and sensory exploration of landscape, spaces and shapes. Footage filmed on location in Japan merges with patterns, photographs and various objects, forming a make believe present and showing a glimpse of how a future based on the past might appear. Originally meant as a video for an installation, the film will be accompanied by a live soundscape by Lukas Simonis during the screening.
